Crew Socks Defined

Neither tall nor short, ribbed on the leg, and usually made of a cotton/poly blend, white crew socks can be found in just about every sock drawer in America. Their versatility is what makes them so popular. Crew socks can be casual or formal, and are perfect for sports.

The World’s Most Popular Sock

Crew socks started out as a standard issue in the navy, but after World War II ended, they became available to everyone. Crew socks have gone on to become the most popular item in the sock industry. Men, women and children all wear this staple sock for its versatility and comfort. Unassuming white crew socks are the rock stars of the sock biz.

When & Where to Wear Crew Socks

Crew socks complement all types of footwear. For casual use, white crew socks work great with sneakers and boots. For dressier events, black crew socks go with brogues and oxfords. Crew socks are so soft and comfy, they make the perfect around-the-house slipper.

White crew socks are great to wear at the gym, for weightlifting in particular. They not only keep your feet dry and comfy, they also protect your shins from bumps and scrapes that frequently accompany lifting weights. Needless to say, white crew socks also look super stylish with any gym gear.

Back to Basics

The base fibers of crew socks contribute to their performance and comfort. Different fibers offer different qualities.

  • Cotton absorbs sweat. This is important because feet are the sweatiest part of the body. Cotton is also durable, meaning your white crew socks won’t fall apart after a few wears.
  • Synthetics such as polyester wick moisture and help crew socks hold their shape. Polyester is also an economical option as a base material for crew socks.

Your feet are happiest and healthiest when they are dry and neither hot nor cold. White crew socks created from a combination of a breathable natural fiber like cotton and a moisture-wicking synthetic fiber such as polyester add up to the perfect blend that keep your peds comfortable and dry all day long. Daily Basic’s white crew socks are a blend of 80% cotton and 20% polyester, making them the ideal sock for work or play.

Crew Sock Construction

Did you ever wonder how crew socks are made? Crew socks are usually created on a circular knitting machine that hooks together a series of loops in the shape of a tube. The first knitting machine was developed in England in the 1500s. Believe it or not, similar techniques are still be used by knitting machines today. These days, a computer program tells the machine how to proceed, and where and when to add color. Once the tube is complete, the sock is sewn at the end, which becomes the toe seam. The sock may be placed on a heated metal frame to help it retain its shape.

Size

Generally speaking, socks aren’t sized as specifically as shoes. Daily Basic’s white crew socks are designed to fit a range of shoe sizes. Daily Basic stocks the most popular sizes: medium and large. See the chart below for guidance.
